The brilliant Scarlett Johansson stars as the title character in the brilliant Luc Besson’s new thriller LUCY – and what a team they make.
From the teaser trailer, LUCY looks dynamite. She’s a girl in a lot of trouble in director Luc Besson’s latest snazzy thriller. But although she’s been forced to be a drugs mule in Taipei, when some of the contents find their way into her system, she’s transformed into a formidably feisty (and brainy) high-kicking chick. And she’s played by Scarlett Johansson.
It’s ok though because the venerable Morgan Freeman is on hand, as a smart professor who can possibly help her unlock what’s happening to her. LUCY reminds me a little of Neil Burger’s superb Limitless with Besson’s trademark action sequences thrown in.
I’m a big fan of Luc Besson. From his early work, Subway and The Big Blue, to Leon and The Fifth Element, he’s always married the dramatic with the action to really thrilling effect. And like his incomparable 1990 thriller Nikita, Besson has cast his lead brilliantly once again in Johansson. With her roles in the fantastic Captain America: The Winter Soldier alongside the very different but fascinating Under the Skin, she is currently doing some of the most interesting work of any A-list Hollywood star.
So get ready for a sharp, high-octane ride come August when the movie is released.
Take a first look and I hope you’ll agree…
