Spring 2014 can’t arrive soon enough because on the strength of this first trailer, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER looks set to dazzle.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, the sequel to Joe Johnston’s terrific origins story, Captain America: The First Avenger, has the action set entirely in the present day – well, the Marvel sort of present day – in counterpoint to its predecessor’s striking World War II backdrop. And our fantastic hero Steve Rogers (played so completely winningly by Chris Evans) is still dealing with being stranded in our time and coming to terms with the loss of 70 years – to him, the blink of an eye but to everyone else, a whole lifetime.
This is brought starkly home to him in the sequel by the villain he now faces, none other than his oldest friend Bucky Barnes (the previously charming but now super deadly Sebastian Stan), who he saw perish in the Alps but who is now very much alive as the very dangerous Winter Soldier of the title. And to top even that set up, there’s the one and only Robert Redford on hand as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. telling us “You’ve shaped the century. And I need to do it one more time.” Amazing.
With new cast members Frank Grillo and the brilliant Anthony Mackie joining the fray as Marvel characters Crossbones and The Falcon respectively, Scarlett Johansson returning to help Rogers out as spirited agent Natasha Romanoff and Samuel L. Jackson back as the ever-so-steely director Fury, I’m going to very happy at the end of March next year when the UK gets the first glimpse of what looks like an absolutely fantastic sequel (courtesy of brothers Anthony & Joe Russo) a week before the film opens in the States.
“Gear up. It’s time.” It soon will be.
